How to Build a strong backlink profile

If you have spent any time trying to improve your search rankings, you have probably been told you need backlinks. What most guides will not tell you is that the wrong backlinks can do nothing for you, and in some cases can actively hurt you.

I have spent 18 years building marketing strategies for small businesses across Derbyshire and the East Midlands, and backlink building is one of the areas where I see the most wasted effort. Business owners buy link packages, swap links with unrelated sites, or chase volume because someone told them "more links equals better rankings." It rarely works that way.

In this guide I will walk you through what actually builds a strong backlink profile in 2026, the tactics worth your time, and the ones you should drop. By the end you will have a clear, practical plan rather than another generic checklist.

Why backlinks still matter for search rankings

Google has changed its algorithm hundreds of times since I started this business, but one thing has stayed constant. A link from another website is still treated as a vote of confidence in yours. The more relevant and trusted that voting site is, the more weight the link carries.

For a Derbyshire SMB competing against bigger budgets, a handful of genuinely strong backlinks will outperform a hundred weak ones. This is the single biggest mindset shift I try to get clients to make.

Quality over quantity, every time

Prioritise links from industry-specific sites, respected publications, and genuine voices in your sector. A single mention from a trade body or regional press source will do more for your SEO than dozens of low-grade directory listings.

I would rather a client had ten backlinks from sites their customers actually trust than a thousand from sites nobody has heard of. Volume without relevance is just noise to Google now. Stuart Baddiley, Optimise Your Marketing

Create content people actually want to link to

Backlinks rarely happen by accident. They happen because you have published something genuinely useful that someone else wants to reference. That could be an in-depth guide, original research, a useful tool, or a clear answer to a question your industry searches for constantly.

One of our clients, a manufacturing firm based near Derby, picked up six organic backlinks in three months after we published a detailed guide answering a technical question their competitors had avoided covering properly. No outreach was needed. The content simply earned the links.

Guest posting, done properly

Guest blogging still works when it is targeted. Find genuinely relevant blogs in your industry, pitch original content tailored to their audience, and resist the temptation to mass-pitch the same article to fifty sites. One well-placed guest post on a respected site beats ten on low-quality blogs.

Build relationships, not just links

Some of the strongest backlink strategies are not really about links at all. They are about relationships.

Influencer and industry collaborations

Co-authored content, interviews, and joint webinars with respected figures in your industry naturally generate backlinks because both parties have a reason to promote the work. This works particularly well for local businesses, where collaborating with other known names in Derbyshire and the wider East Midlands carries real weight with local audiences.

Local partnerships

If you serve a local market, do not overlook local partnerships. Sponsoring a community event, partnering with another local business, or being featured in regional press all generate backlinks that also strengthen your local marketing and visibility in Google searches near you.

One Derbyshire retailer went from page three to page one

After we rebuilt their backlink strategy around relevant industry sites instead of volume, a local retail client moved from page three to the top of page one for their core search term within five months.

Find the gaps your competitors have missed

Monitor competitor backlinks

Tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush will show you exactly where your competitors are earning their links. This is one of the fastest ways to find realistic opportunities, because if a site has linked to a competitor, there is a reasonable chance they will consider linking to you too.

The skyscraper technique

Find popular content in your industry, create something noticeably better, then reach out to the sites linking to the original piece. It takes more effort upfront than most tactics on this list, but it consistently produces higher quality links because you are offering a genuinely superior resource.

Broken link building

Search for broken links on relevant, authoritative sites and suggest your own content as a replacement. It is a small, practical favour to the site owner and a legitimate way to earn a backlink without asking for one outright.

Protect what you have built

A strong backlink profile is not a one-off project. It needs maintaining. Audit your backlinks regularly using Google Search Console or Moz, and disavow anything toxic or spammy before it drags your site down. This matters as much as building new links in the first place.

Pair this with ongoing testing and measurement so you can see which links are actually driving traffic and enquiries, not just sitting there.

Where backlinks fit into the bigger picture

Backlinks are one part of one pillar. They sit inside SEO, which is one of the 12 pillars in our BIG12 framework, the system we have used with Derbyshire and East Midlands businesses for 18 years to build marketing that actually works as a whole, rather than as disconnected tactics.

A strong backlink profile on its own will not save a weak website, a confused brand, or a business with no lead generation process to capture the traffic it brings in. Read more about how the full framework fits together on our BIG12 framework page.

The challenge is never learning. It is doing.

Everything in this guide is straightforward in theory. Find quality sites, create useful content, build relationships, monitor competitors, audit regularly. None of it is a secret.

The hard part is doing it consistently while also running a business. Most SMB owners I meet already know roughly what they should be doing. What they are missing is the time, the team, or the structured plan to actually execute it month after month.

That is where we come in. After 18 years helping Derbyshire and East Midlands businesses turn marketing knowledge into marketing results, we know the difference between a strategy that sits in a document and one that actually moves your rankings.
