SEO Optimisation Companies UK: How to Choose One (2026)
Most small business owners who go looking for SEO optimisation companies have already been burned once. A promise of page one, then a monthly report full of impressions and no extra phone calls. If that sounds familiar, you are in good company.
I have spent 18 years in marketing, and I run Optimise Your Marketing (OYM) from Cromford Mills in Derbyshire. I work with small businesses across Derbyshire, the East Midlands and the wider UK, and I have seen SEO done brilliantly and done badly.
This guide explains what to expect from a professional SEO partner, compares retainers, projects, sprints and DIY platforms, shares short case studies with real numbers, and ends with a checklist you can use on any provider, including me.

A professional SEO partner should be able to point at six areas of work and tell you which one matters most for your business. Here is what each should deliver, and the proof to ask for.
| Work | What it covers | Proof to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword research | The terms your customers search, by volume, intent and competition | A prioritised list tied to services you sell |
| On-page SEO | Titles, headings, content structure, internal links, image alt text | Before and after page changes |
| Technical SEO | Site speed, mobile, Core Web Vitals, crawlability, schema | An audit with fixes ranked by impact |
| Content SEO | Service pages, blog posts and FAQs that fill gaps | A content plan tied to enquiries |
| Link building | Digital PR, resource links, competitor backlink analysis | Named, relevant sources and no bought links |
| Tracking and reporting | Weekly rank tracking across priority keywords | Reports showing enquiries, not just rankings |
SEO is also slower than most owners hope. An Ahrefs study tracking one million random URLs found only 1.74% of newly published pages reached the top 10 within a year, and the average page in position one is five years old. It is a US study of new pages, so treat it as a lesson in patience, not a rule.
What I tell clients across Derbyshire and the East Midlands is this: expect meaningful ranking movement within about three months and significant traffic growth by month six. A provider promising page one in 30 days is selling you something else. Whoever you hire, make sure they set up test and measure reporting from week one.
Local SEO or national SEO?
A plumber in Matlock needs local SEO: a strong Google Business Profile, location pages, reviews and consistent listings. An online retailer needs national rankings for product terms, which means more content and more links.
Ask every provider which one they are pricing. The work, the timescale and the cost are very different.
SEO optimisation companies compared: retainer, project, sprint or DIY
Alex Hormozi talks about three ways people buy help: do it yourself, do it with me, or do it for me. SEO works the same way. The right model depends on your time, your budget and how hands-on you want to be.
| Model | How it works | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | Ongoing fee for continuous SEO work | Competitive markets that need constant effort | Paying for activity, long lock-ins |
| One-off project | Fixed fee for an audit or defined build | A specific fix, such as a site migration | No follow-through after delivery |
| Sprint-led | Fixed scope, fixed fee, one problem, set time | A clear result in a short window | Needs a planned next step |
| DIY or AI-assisted platform | Software and guidance, you do the work | Owners with time and discipline | Progress stalls without consistency |
Two UK agency price guides published in 2026 put typical small business SEO retainers at roughly £1,000 to £3,500 a month, with one-off audits from £500 to £5,000. My own SEO Sprint starts from £1,200 for a fixed scope, ex VAT. The full range is on my pricing page.
Price moves with five things, so compare quotes on the same basis.
| Price driver | Why it changes the cost |
|---|---|
| Competition | Ranking for national terms costs more than ranking for a town |
| Site health | A slow or broken site needs fixing before content can work |
| Geographic scope | One town is cheaper than the whole UK |
| Content needs | Regulated or technical sectors need more careful content |
| Timeline | Faster targets need more resource |
Do not buy SEO by the hour or by the promise. Buy it by the outcome, with a date on it.

Numbers beat adjectives. These results come from OYM client work. Every business starts from a different place, so treat them as evidence of process, not promises.
Etta Plumbing: page one for Plumbers Derby
Etta was tied into a Yell.com contract and did not own its website. We rebuilt an independent site and ran a local SEO strategy with 30+ geo-focused blog posts. The result was page-one rankings for "Plumbers Derby" and "Plumbers Near Me", a 53% improvement in SEO position and full ownership of the site returned.
Ferndale Garden Centre: 72% more online orders
An SEO strategy built around key garden centre terms delivered page-one rankings and 72% year-on-year growth in online orders.
Avon: 2,500+ page-one keywords
A three-year SEO project covered product pages and representative recruitment pages. We managed the duplicate-page structure with care, reaching 2,500+ page-one keywords with zero Google penalties.
The pattern is the same each time: a clear target, a focus on the services and places customers actually search, no shortcuts that risk a penalty, and enough time for the work to compound. Etta was rebuilt around ownership first. Avon ran for three years.
| Client | What we did | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Ashley Foster PT (Derby) | New website and local SEO strategy | 50+ key terms ranking on page one |
| Nayyar's Solicitors | SEO and geo-focused content | 745 keywords ranking, 40+ blog posts published (May 2026) |
| Jon Paul Menswear | Contract exit, site rebuild, local SEO | 59.3% of traffic from organic search, full site control returned |

A practical checklist for choosing SEO optimisation companies
Seth Godin's idea of the minimum viable audience is a useful lens. You do not need everyone in the UK. You need the customers within reach of what you sell.
A good provider starts there. Use these questions on any shortlist.
| Ask this | A good answer sounds like |
|---|---|
| What will I have at day 30 and day 90? | Named deliverables and a dated plan |
| Which numbers will you report? | Enquiries, calls and cost per lead, not just rankings |
| Who owns the website, Google profile and analytics? | You do, always, with admin access |
| How do you build links? | Relevant, earned sources. No bought links |
| What is the minimum contract? | Short, or a fixed scope with a clear end |
| Can I speak to a client in my sector and region? | Named references, in Derbyshire, the East Midlands or your area |
| What do you need from me? | A clear list of access, approvals and time |
| What happens when the work ends? | A handover and a next-step plan |
Walk away from guaranteed rankings, secret methods, contracts that lock you in and anyone who will not give you admin access. Etta Plumbing's Yell.com contract is what that looks like in practice.
Before you contact anyone, search your main service plus your town and note who ranks. Those are the businesses any provider has to beat, and the first thing to ask them about.
Where Optimise Your Marketing fits: sprint-led SEO from Derbyshire
I am a UK-based agency, working from Cromford Mills in Derbyshire, and my approach is sprint-led. Each sprint fixes one BIG12 pillar, with scope and outcome agreed in writing before work starts.
Most sprints finish within two to four weeks, inside a 30-day window. You can read more about OYM here.
My SEO Sprint covers keyword research, on-page optimisation of five pages, Google Business Profile setup, a local citation audit and a 90-day action plan. Rankings still take time, so the sprint gives you the foundations and a plan. After that you choose what suits you.
| Option | What it is | From |
|---|---|---|
| SEO Sprint | Fixed-scope SEO work with a 90-day plan | £1,200 |
| OptiTank | DIY platform that guides you through all 12 BIG12 pillars and rewrites your copy | £29.99 a month (founding rate) |
| Buddy | AI marketing advisor trained on the BIG12, with 18 years of my expertise behind it | £99 a month, setup from £499 |
| Monthly plan | Account-managed sprints and regular calls | £1,500 a month |
OptiTank suits owners who want to do the work themselves. Buddy suits owners who want an always-on advisor to audit, plan and answer questions between sprints. In a fiercely competitive market, a done-for-you sprint or monthly plan is usually the better route.
How SEO connects to the BIG12 framework
SEO sits in the Get Found cluster alongside Website, Google and Local. It works best when the pillars around it are sound. Rankings bring visitors, and the rest of the framework decides whether they become customers.
| Pillar | Its job alongside SEO |
|---|---|
| Website | Turns visits into enquiries |
| Builds map visibility and trust through reviews | |
| Lead Generation | Captures visitors before they leave |
| CRM | Follows up every enquiry |
| AI | Keeps you visible as AI search grows |
Fixing several connected pillars compounds, which is why one channel alone rarely moves the needle. You can learn the whole framework on my online marketing training page.

Get my BIG12 scoreThe challenge is never learning. It is doing.
You now know what to expect from SEO optimisation companies, how the engagement models compare and what to ask before you sign. Most owners I speak to already know SEO matters. The gap is doing it consistently for long enough to see it work.
That gap is why I built sprints, OptiTank and Buddy. A sprint gets the foundations done. OptiTank guides you when you want to do the work yourself.
Buddy advises you between sprints. Whether you are in Derbyshire, the East Midlands or anywhere in the UK, the aim is a defined result in a set time.
