Low Cost Marketing Ideas for UK Small Businesses (2026)

You need enquiries this month, not a 12-month brand strategy. The diary is thin, the budget is tight and every marketer you speak to wants a retainer. If that is you, these low cost marketing ideas for small businesses are the ones I would do first.

I have spent 18 years in marketing, and I run Optimise Your Marketing (OYM) from Cromford Mills in Derbyshire. Most of my clients are small UK businesses, many across Derbyshire and the East Midlands. The fastest results almost always come from a handful of simple fixes, done in the right order.

This guide covers local SEO, a simple CRM set-up, conversion-focused landing pages and targeted social ads. Each comes with a short template and example KPIs, followed by a 30/60/90-day sprint plan. You will also see how a fitness studio, a menswear retailer and an engineering firm got their results.

Low cost marketing ideas for small businesses: the five that work fastest

Most of the cost here is your time, not your money. The order matters: fix where enquiries land before you pay to send more of them.

TacticTypical costSet-up timeFirst KPI
Local SEOFree, plus your time1 to 2 daysProfile calls and direction requests
Simple CRMFree tier available1 dayTime to first reply
Landing pageYour existing website builder2 to 3 daysEnquiry conversion rate
Social adsFrom £5 to £10 a day1 dayCost per enquiry
30/60/90 planFree1 hourWeekly enquiries

Set-up times assume your offer and photos are ready. The budget figures are a sensible starting point, not a rule.

Low cost local SEO: get found by nearby customers

A widely quoted figure says around 46% of Google searches have local intent. Whatever the exact number, someone typing "physio near me" wants an answer close by. Your free Google Business Profile is the fastest way to be that answer.

  1. Claim and complete your profile: primary category, services, hours and real photos.
  2. Add a page for each town you serve, with genuine local detail.
  3. Ask every happy customer for a review within 48 hours.
  4. Match your name, address and phone number across every directory.
Template: review request

Hi [Name], thanks for choosing [Business]. If you were happy with [service], would you leave a short Google review? It takes 30 seconds: [link]. It helps other people in [town] find us.

KPIs to track: profile calls, direction requests, new reviews a month (example target: 4) and page-one local terms. A Matlock physio and a Belper barber would track the same four numbers. You can go deeper on local marketing in the BIG12.

Fitness studio: Balance & Beam

Balance & Beam, a fitness and gymnastics business, had limited enquiries from its local market. We optimised its local listings, added branded social media and email, and followed with social ads. Weekly enquiries grew from 4 or 5 to 33 and it now ranks on page one locally.

You can read the full Balance & Beam case study.

A simple CRM set-up so no enquiry slips away

An enquiry you answer late is an enquiry you paid for and lost. A widely cited Harvard Business Review study of 2,241 US firms found an average first response time of 42 hours, and only 37% replied within the hour. It was a US B2B study, but the lesson travels: speed wins.

You do not need expensive software. A free tier, such as HubSpot's, and five pipeline stages will do. This is the CRM pillar in its simplest form.

Template: first follow-up

Hi [Name], thanks for your enquiry about [service]. I can offer [option] on [day]. Does [time] suit? If not, reply with a time and I will make it work. [Your name], [phone]

Engineering firm: AEGIS Engineering

AEGIS, a rail and engineering business, needed HubSpot onboarding, LinkedIn support for expansion into Canada and Ireland, and a new website for ETCS Rail. The CRM now connects 90+ employees on one system and saved £3,000+ on HubSpot costs. Alongside the new site and LinkedIn push, yearly sales rose 51%.

Fix where enquiries land before you pay to send more of them.

Page one for "Plumbers Derby"

Etta Plumbing rebuilt its own website, added 30+ local blog posts and reached page one for "Plumbers Derby" and "Plumbers Near Me", a 53% improvement in SEO position. See how local marketing works inside the BIG12.

Conversion-focused landing pages that turn clicks into enquiries

Traffic without a good landing page is wasted money. Donald Miller separates direct calls to action, such as "book a call", from transitional ones, such as a free guide. Your page needs one clear direct call to action and nothing competing with it.

Template: landing page skeleton

Headline: [Outcome] for [customer] in [town]
Proof: three short results or reviews
Form: name, phone or email, one question
Button: [Book my free trial] or [Get my quote]
Mobile: phone number visible without scrolling

KPIs to track: enquiry conversion rate and form completions. Unbounce's 2024 benchmark across 41,000 landing pages found a median conversion rate of 6.6%, with ecommerce at 4.2% and professional services at 6.1%. Record your own baseline first, then beat it.

Menswear retailer: Jon Paul Menswear

Jon Paul was tied into a restrictive agency contract that limited changes to its site. We exited the contract, rebuilt the website on Squarespace and added a local SEO strategy. Now 59.3% of its traffic comes from organic search and the owner has 100% control of the site.

East Midlands retailers can check their own pages with the free website review.

Targeted social ads on a small budget

Ads come after your profile, CRM and landing page are working. Otherwise you pay to pour people into a leaky bucket. Start with one offer, one audience and one landing page.

  1. Audience: people within a set radius of your location, not the whole of the UK.
  2. Offer: a trial, a quote or a free consultation, not a general "contact us".
  3. Budget: from £5 to £10 a day for two to four weeks, testing two creatives.
Template: ad copy

[Audience] in [town]: [outcome] in [timeframe]. [One proof point]. [Button: Book now]

KPIs to track: cost per enquiry, click-through rate and enquiries by source. Set a ceiling first: average customer value x enquiry-to-customer rate x the share you will spend on marketing. As an illustration, £600 x 25% x 20% gives a £30 ceiling per enquiry.

Balance & Beam combined local optimisation with social ads, which shows why the order matters: profile first, ads second. Measure everything through test and measure so you can pause what does not work.

Low cost marketing ideas for small businesses: a 30/60/90-day sprint plan with measurable outcomes

Sprints work because they are short, scoped and measured. Set your baseline this week, then work the plan in three 30-day blocks.

PhaseFocusActionsExample KPI target
Days 1 to 30FoundationsComplete your profile, set up the CRM, publish the landing page, install call and form trackingBaseline recorded, first reply under one hour
Days 31 to 60TrafficLaunch small ads, run review requests, add area pagesCost per enquiry at or below your ceiling, 4 new reviews
Days 61 to 90OptimisePause weak ads, back the best, refine the pageWeekly enquiries above baseline, conversion rate rising

The targets are illustrative, so set yours from your own baseline. Borrow Daniel Priestley's habit of pause, reflect, document: ten minutes every Friday on what enquiries did, what you changed and what comes next. If your demand is seasonal, start the plan eight weeks before your peak.

How one or two BIG12 sprints deliver these outcomes

You can run this plan yourself, or I can run it with you. Each sprint fixes one BIG12 pillar, with scope and price agreed in writing before work starts. Most finish within two to four weeks, inside a 30-day window.

OptionWhat it coversFrom
Sprint 1: SEO SprintKeyword research, on-page optimisation of five pages, Google Business Profile setup, local citation audit, 90-day action plan£1,200
Sprint 2: Lead Generation SprintLead magnet concept, landing page build, email capture, 3-email nurture sequence, traffic recommendations£1,200
OptiTankDIY platform that guides you through all 12 BIG12 pillars and rewrites your copy£29.99 a month (founding rate), cancel any time
BuddyAI marketing advisor trained on the BIG12 that audits, plans and tracks progress£99 a month, setup from £499, cancel any time

Two sprints start from £2,400, ex VAT, and a CRM set-up sprint can sit alongside them. If cash is tight, start with OptiTank or Buddy and run the first 30 days yourself. I work from Cromford Mills in Derbyshire with businesses across the East Midlands and the UK, and all prices are on my pricing page.

How these tactics connect to the BIG12 framework

Every tactic above sits inside the BIG12, my framework of 12 marketing pillars in three clusters. Fixing connected pillars compounds, which is why a profile, a CRM and a landing page beat any one of them alone.

The challenge is never learning. It is doing.

You now have five tactics, four templates and a 90-day plan. Most owners I speak to could write this plan themselves. The gap is doing it week after week while running a business.

That gap is why I built sprints, OptiTank and Buddy. A sprint gets a pillar fixed. OptiTank guides you when you would rather do the work yourself, and Buddy advises you between sprints.

Whether you are in Derbyshire, the East Midlands or elsewhere in the UK, start with one tactic this week. If you want help choosing, meet with me and we will pick the right one together.
