Google Business Profile Suspended? How to Get It Back (2026)
You open Google to check your reviews and your listing has gone. Or you log in and see a red banner telling you your Google Business Profile is suspended. No warning, no phone call, no clear reason.
For a local business, that is not a small problem. Your Google Business Profile is often where most of your calls, direction requests and website visits start. When it disappears from Maps, those enquiries go straight to the competitor down the road.
I have been in marketing for 18 years, and helping Derbyshire businesses with their Google listings is one of the most common jobs we do at Optimise Your Marketing. Suspensions feel random, but they almost never are. This guide explains why your Google Business Profile was suspended, what to fix before you appeal, and exactly how to get it back.

Check my visibilityGoogle Business Profile suspended: first, do not panic (or do these three things)
The instinct is to start changing things or set up a new profile. Both usually make it worse. Before you touch anything, do this:
- Do not create a new profile. Google sees duplicate listings as a policy breach and it can turn a fixable suspension into a permanent one.
- Do not delete the suspended profile. You lose your reviews, photos and history, and you lose the ability to appeal.
- Screenshot everything. The suspension notice, your current listing details and any recent edits. You will need them later.
"Almost every permanent suspension I have seen started as a fixable one. The damage came from the panic edits and the second profile, not the original problem."

The two types of Google Business Profile suspension
Not every suspension looks the same. Knowing which one you have tells you how urgent it is.
| Type | What you see | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Soft suspension (also called "limited" or unverified) | Your listing may still show on Google, but you cannot manage it, reply to reviews or make edits | Customers can still find you, but you have lost control |
| Hard suspension | Your listing disappears from Google Search and Maps entirely, often with reviews hidden | Enquiries from Google stop overnight |
Both can be appealed. The process is the same, but a hard suspension needs stronger evidence and a cleaner profile before you submit.
Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?
Google rarely tells you the exact reason. In my experience working with businesses across the East Midlands, it nearly always comes down to one of these.
1. Your address does not qualify
Virtual offices, PO boxes, co-working desks and registered office addresses are the biggest cause I see. Google wants a real location where you meet customers, or no address shown at all.
I know this one first-hand. OYM's registered office is at Cromford Mills, but the team does not work from there day to day, so our own profile cannot show that address. Service area businesses like plumbers, cleaners and consultants should hide their address and list the areas they cover instead.
2. Keywords stuffed into the business name
"Smith Plumbing" is fine. "Smith Plumbing Derby Emergency Boiler Repair Best Plumber" is not. Your profile name must match the name on your signage, website and paperwork.
3. Big edits made all at once
Changing your name, address, category and phone number in the same week looks like an account takeover. Google often suspends first and asks questions later.
4. Duplicate or multiple listings
Two profiles for the same business at the same address, or a sole trader with a separate listing for every town they cover, will trigger a suspension.
5. Ineligible business type
Online-only businesses with no customer contact, rental properties and some lead generation setups are not eligible. If your business does not serve customers face to face, at your location or theirs, you may not qualify.
6. Suspicious reviews or third-party management
Buying reviews, review gating or handing your login to an overseas "Google listing" company can all flag your account. So can adding lots of managers you do not recognise.
How to fix your profile before you appeal
You get far better results by fixing the cause first and appealing second. Google's reviewers are checking whether the profile now meets the Google Business Profile guidelines, not whether you are sorry.
- Match your name to real life. Remove any extra keywords so it matches your signage and website exactly.
- Sort out your address. If customers do not visit you, hide the address and set a service area. If you have a real premises, make sure the address matches your utility bills and website footer.
- Check your categories. One accurate primary category is better than five loose ones.
- Make your website consistent. Your website should show the same business name, address and phone number as your profile.
- Remove unknown managers. Check who has access and remove anyone you do not recognise.

Etta Plumbing in Osmaston, Derby reached page one for "plumbers Derby" and "plumbers near me" by getting their Google profile, website and local content working together. A clean, compliant profile is the foundation.
See our Google serviceHow to appeal a suspended Google Business Profile, step by step
Once the profile is clean, you are ready to appeal. Google handles this through its Business Profile appeals tool, which you can reach from the suspension notice in your account.
Step 1: Sign in with the owner account
Use the Google account that owns the profile, not a manager account. Appeals from the wrong account are often rejected.
Step 2: Open the appeals tool and select the profile
Follow the link from your suspension notice, choose the affected profile and start the appeal.
Step 3: Upload strong evidence
Google now lets you attach evidence directly to the appeal. Give them as much as you reasonably can:
- Photos of your permanent signage, ideally with the street visible
- A recent utility bill or business rates bill showing the business name and address
- Your Companies House certificate or business registration
- Any trade licence or accreditation relevant to your sector
- A short video walking from the street to your premises, if you have a physical location
Step 4: Submit once, then wait
Submit one appeal and leave it. Multiple appeals for the same profile can slow things down. Most decisions arrive within a few days, but some take a couple of weeks.
Step 5: If it is rejected, find the real cause
A rejection usually means the underlying problem has not been fixed, or the evidence did not prove it. Go back through the reasons above, tighten the profile and gather better proof before trying again. The Google Business Profile Help Community is also worth posting in, as volunteer Product Experts can escalate genuine cases.
Protect your profile from the next suspension
Make one change at a time, leave a week between big edits, and keep a folder of signage photos and utility bills ready. If it ever happens again, you can appeal the same day.
How long does it take to get a suspended Google Business Profile back?
A straightforward soft suspension with good evidence can be resolved within a week. Hard suspensions, or profiles with repeated issues, can take several weeks and sometimes more than one appeal.
When a profile is reinstated, your reviews and photos normally come back with it. Rankings can take a little while to settle, so keep posting updates and replying to reviews to show Google the profile is active again.
Google Business Profile suspended: quick answers
Can I call Google to get my profile back?
Not directly for suspensions. The appeals tool is the official route. Phone and chat support, where available, will usually point you back to it.
Will I lose my reviews?
Not if the profile is reinstated. Reviews are hidden during a hard suspension and normally reappear once it is lifted. Deleting the profile or starting a new one is what loses them for good.
Should I pay a reinstatement service?
Be careful. Some are excellent, but nobody can guarantee a result, and handing your login to a stranger is one of the things that gets profiles suspended. If you do get help, keep ownership of the account and add them as a manager only.
Can a suspension affect my website rankings?
It will not penalise your website directly, but you lose the traffic and calls the profile was sending, and the local signals that support your wider rankings in Derby, Nottingham and beyond.
Why your Google Business Profile matters so much for local SEO
For local businesses in Derbyshire and the East Midlands, the map results often sit above everything else on the page. That is why a suspension hurts so much, and why the profile deserves the same care as your website.
Your profile works hand in hand with your local marketing and SEO. Consistent details across your site, directories and profile build the trust Google needs to rank you, and to leave you alone.
Where Google fits in the BIG12 framework
Google is one of the four Get Found pillars in the BIG12, alongside Website, SEO and Local. When one of them breaks, the others feel it. A suspended profile drains traffic from your site, and a website with mismatched details can be the reason the profile was suspended in the first place.
That is why we never treat a Google listing in isolation. If you want to understand how all 12 pillars connect, our BIG12 online marketing training walks you through each one.
