12 BIG12 Pillars Explained: A Plain-English Glossary for Business Owners
Every BIG12 audit starts with me explaining at least half the pillar names to the business owner in the room, and that's not a knock on them, it's a knock on how much jargon this industry uses as a shortcut. Here's the plain-English version: all 12 BIG12 pillars, what each one actually means, and why it matters. Run your own business against this list. Most owners are strong in one cluster and weak in another.
1. Website (Get Found)
Whether your site is fast, mobile-friendly, structured so search engines and visitors can both find what they need, and built to convert traffic into leads rather than just exist.
Why it matters: plenty of attractive websites quietly fail on every one of those measures.
2. SEO (Get Found)
The ongoing work of making sure your website shows up when people search for what you offer, technical health, target keywords, and content that answers what customers actually search for.
Why it matters: it's not a one-off setup. Competitors and search behaviour keep moving.
3. Google/GBP (Get Found)
Your Google Business Profile, the listing with your map pin, hours, reviews and photos that shows up when someone searches for your business nearby.
Why it matters: it's often the first impression a local customer has of you, before they reach your website.
4. Local (Get Found)
Broader than Google/GBP: everything that helps search engines and AI tools trust you're a genuine, established local business, consistent details, local pages, reviews, local citations.
Why it matters: a business can be strong on Google/GBP and still weak here, which is why we score them separately.
5. Lead Generation (Get Leads)
The deliberate systems that turn interest into an enquiry: forms, calls to action, landing pages, paid advertising.
Why it matters: a business can have excellent visibility and still generate almost no leads if this pillar is neglected.
6. Social Media (Get Leads)
Not measured by follower count. Judged on whether your presence on the platforms your customers actually use is building relationships and driving real enquiries.
Why it matters: a smaller, engaged following on one or two platforms beats a scattered presence across five.
7. AI (Get Leads)
How visible and citable your business is to AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews, increasingly the first place people go for recommendations.
Why it matters: this pillar simply didn't exist two or three years ago, and it already affects who gets recommended today.
8. Algorithms (Get Leads)
The ranking and recommendation logic behind Google, Meta, TikTok and every other platform you rely on for visibility, and how you deliberately work with it rather than guessing.
Why it matters: a strategy that worked six months ago can quietly stop working the moment a platform changes how it ranks content, and most businesses only notice after enquiries have already dropped.
9. Brand (Get Loyal)
Whether your business has a consistent, recognisable identity and message across every touchpoint, website, email, social media.
Why it matters: inconsistency here quietly erodes trust even when nobody can point to exactly why.
10. Influencers (Get Loyal)
Genuine relationships with local voices, other business owners, community figures, micro-influencers in your niche, not necessarily anyone famous, who can vouch for you to an audience you don't already have.
Why it matters: a recommendation from someone your customers already trust carries more weight than almost anything you can say about yourself.
11. CRM (Get Loyal)
The system, or lack of one, behind how you track leads, customers and their history with your business.
Why it matters: a surprising number of businesses are still running this pillar out of someone's inbox and a notepad.
12. Test and Measure (Get Loyal)
Actually knowing what's working, tracking the numbers that matter, and being willing to change course based on evidence rather than habit.
Why it matters: without this pillar, it's genuinely hard to know if the other eleven are pulling their weight. It's usually the one we find in the worst state.
