How to Build high-quality landing pages
Most landing pages fail before a single visitor lands on them. The brief gets written in a rush, the design copies a template, and the copy talks about the business instead of the customer. Then the traffic arrives, bounces, and everyone blames the ad spend.
I have been building and fixing landing pages for UK small businesses for 18 years, working out of Cromford Mills here in Derbyshire. In that time I have seen the same handful of mistakes sink page after page, and the same handful of fixes turn a 1% conversion rate into 8% or higher without spending another penny on traffic.
This guide walks through exactly how to build a high-quality landing page that converts, covering purpose, design, copy, technical setup and testing. By the end you will have a clear checklist you can apply to your own page today.

Before you touch design or copy, decide what this page is for. Lead generation, a product sale, an event sign-up, a booking. Pick one. A page trying to do three jobs at once does none of them well.
I worked with a Derbyshire-based trades business a few years back whose landing page tried to capture quotes, sell a maintenance plan and promote a referral scheme all on the same page. We split it into three focused pages and conversions across the site rose by 64% within two months.
Your single objective should drive every decision that follows, from headline to lead generation form length. This is also where the BIG12 approach earns its keep. A landing page is never a standalone asset, it is one pillar working alongside your wider marketing.
Design and user experience that does not get in the way
Keep the layout clean and intuitive
A single-column layout almost always outperforms a busy multi-column one. It guides the eye from headline to proof to call to action without giving the visitor an excuse to wander off.
Build for mobile first
The majority of traffic to most East Midlands SMB sites now arrives on a phone. If your page is not built mobile-first, you are losing leads before they even read your headline. Test every page on an actual phone, not just a resized browser window.
Keep branding consistent
Your colours, fonts and logo should match the ad or email that brought the visitor here. Inconsistency between ad and landing page is one of the quickest ways to trigger doubt, and doubt kills conversions.
A landing page is a promise kept. If the ad says one thing and the page says another, you have already lost the visitor before they have read a word of your copy. Stuart Baddiley, Optimise Your Marketing
Write copy that earns the click
Headlines that speak to a real problem
Your headline is doing more work than any other element on the page. "Boost Your SEO Rankings in 30 Days" works because it states a benefit and a timeframe. Vague headlines like "Welcome to our services" do neither and visitors bounce within seconds.
Short, persuasive copy
Lead with benefits, not features. Use bullet points for scannability. A visitor reading on their phone in a queue at the supermarket is not going to read three paragraphs of dense text, however well written.
A call to action that is impossible to miss
"Get Started Now" and "Download Your Free Guide" work because they are specific and action-led. Your CTA button needs to stand out visually, ideally using a contrasting brand colour, and it should appear more than once on longer pages.
How one redesign tripled enquiries
A Nottinghamshire home services client came to us with a landing page generating fewer than ten enquiries a month. After a focused redesign around a single CTA and a clearer headline, that figure rose to over thirty within six weeks, with no increase in ad spend.
See how we approach website projectsUse visuals that build trust, not just decoration
Professional images and short videos resonate far more than generic stock photography. If you can show real people, real premises or a real product in use, do it. Visitors trust what looks authentic.
Testimonials, case studies and recognisable accreditation badges all reduce the perceived risk of taking the next step. For a local business, mentioning your town or county by name in a testimonial does more for trust than any design flourish. A line like "based in Derby, recommended by three other local trades" carries real weight.
Get the technical foundations right
Loading speed
A slow page bleeds visitors before they ever see your offer. Run your page through Google PageSpeed Insights and fix anything flagged as a major issue. Every extra second of load time costs you conversions.
SEO without sacrificing conversion
Your primary goal is conversion, but that does not mean ignoring search visibility. Use your target keyword naturally in the headline, in the first paragraph, and in your meta title and description. Do not stuff it in awkwardly. A page that reads naturally and ranks well beats a keyword-stuffed page that converts nobody.
Track everything
Without analytics you are guessing. Set up proper tracking through Google Analytics or your CRM so you can see where visitors drop off and which traffic sources actually convert. This is the foundation of any genuine test and measure approach.
Test, do not assume
Run A/B tests on headlines, hero images and CTA wording. Small changes can move conversion rates significantly, and the only way to know what works for your audience is to test it rather than guess. We have seen a single headline change lift conversions by over 20% for a Derbyshire retail client, purely because the new version named the customer's actual problem instead of describing the product.
Manage budget and traffic sources sensibly
Google Ads and Facebook Ads remain the most cost-effective way to drive targeted traffic to a new landing page, provided your targeting is tight. Start with a modest budget, watch performance closely, and shift spend toward whatever channel is actually converting rather than whatever channel feels most familiar.
Retargeting is worth setting up from day one. Most visitors will not convert on their first visit, and a well-timed retargeting ad can bring them back when they are ready.
How this connects to the BIG12 framework
A landing page never works in isolation. It sits inside a wider marketing system covering brand, SEO, social, CRM and more, which is exactly what our BIG12 framework maps out. Get the landing page right but neglect your CRM follow-up or your Google Business Profile, and you are still leaving money on the table.
If you want to see how landing pages fit alongside the other eleven pillars, our online marketing training walks through the full BIG12 approach in plain English.

Everything in this guide is straightforward on paper. Clear purpose, clean design, honest copy, fast loading, proper testing. None of it is a secret.
The gap that actually costs businesses money is implementation. Knowing you should A/B test your headline is not the same as having the time, process or discipline to actually do it every month alongside everything else running a business demands.
That gap is where we come in. After 18 years working with SMBs across Derbyshire and the East Midlands, the businesses that win are not the ones with the cleverest ideas, they are the ones that actually execute consistently.
