Google AI Overviews Update: How to Get Cited Instead of Buried
If your Google traffic has dipped this year even though your rankings have not moved, you are not imagining it. Google's AI Overviews now answer a growing share of searches directly on the results page, and for a lot of business owners that has meant fewer clicks through to the website underneath.
I have spent 18 years optimising websites for businesses across Derbyshire and the East Midlands, and this is the first shift in search that genuinely worries the site owners I work with. Not because the answers Google gives are wrong, but because fewer people ever reach the page they came from.
Google has just rolled out five updates aimed at fixing exactly that problem. In this post I will walk through what changed, why Google made the move, and what it actually means for your SEO strategy if you run a business in Derbyshire or anywhere else in the UK.

Google has introduced five updates to AI Overviews and AI Mode, all aimed at making it clearer where an AI-generated answer actually came from. Previously, one of the biggest criticisms of AI Overviews was that source attribution felt like an afterthought, tucked away at the bottom of the answer where hardly anyone looked.
Citations Now Sit Next to the Text They Support
Instead of grouping every source at the end of a response, links now sit directly beside the relevant sentence. Anyone reading the answer can see exactly which website backs up a specific claim, rather than guessing which of five listed sources said what.
Hover Previews Show What a Site Is About Before You Click
On desktop, hovering over a citation now brings up a preview card with context about the linked page. It gives searchers a reason to click through rather than taking the AI summary at face value.
News Publishers Get Clearer Branding
News publishers now appear with more visible branding, and in some cases subscription information, alongside AI-generated responses. That makes it easier for readers to recognise where the original reporting came from.
Social Media Citations Now Name the Creator
AI Mode is now showing creator names and profile handles alongside social content, rather than just a generic link. Whoever made the original post gets the credit.
Suggested Research Angles Push People to Keep Digging
Rather than ending on a single answer, Google now suggests follow-up questions and related topics. It is a small nudge that encourages searchers to keep exploring instead of stopping at the summary.
Google is not backing away from AI Overviews. It is trying to prove they can send you traffic instead of taking it. Stuart Baddiley, Optimise Your Marketing
Why Google Is Fixing AI Overview Attribution Now
Since AI Overviews launched, one concern has dominated conversations among publishers and SEO professionals: if users get a complete answer without leaving the results page, why would they ever click through to the source? It is a reasonable worry, and the traffic data backing it up has been hard to ignore.
One of our retail clients near Chesterfield saw organic sessions drop by double digits earlier this year, even though their keyword rankings barely moved. That is the AI Overviews effect in action, and it is exactly the kind of pattern Google is now trying to soften with these attribution changes.
We helped a Derbyshire manufacturer recover lost search visibility
When one of our long-standing East Midlands clients saw referral traffic slide, we rebuilt their content around original data and clearer structure. Within three months their organic enquiries were back above where they started.

None of this requires a completely new strategy. It reinforces what has always driven search visibility, it just raises the stakes for doing it properly.
Publish Something Original
AI systems need reliable information to draw from. If your content repeats what a dozen other pages already say, it has nothing distinctive to offer. Original research, real client results, or genuine hands-on experience gives AI systems, and readers, a reason to reference you specifically.
Strengthen Your EEAT Signals
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust still matter more than most people realise. Show who wrote the piece, back up claims with credible sourcing, and keep content current rather than letting it go stale for years.
Structure Content So It Can Be Quoted
Use clear headings, answer the obvious question directly near the top, and support key points with a specific stat or figure. Content that is well organised is far easier for AI systems, and human readers, to extract and cite.
Keep an Eye on Your Analytics
Track impressions, click-through rate and referral traffic month on month rather than waiting for a quarterly surprise. Our test and measure approach is built for exactly this kind of ongoing monitoring, so you spot a dip while it is still small.
Where AI Visibility Fits Into the BIG12 Framework
AI search visibility is not a separate discipline bolted onto SEO. It sits inside the same twelve pillars we use with every client through our BIG12 framework, alongside search, content, brand and data. Businesses that treat AI marketing as one more channel to bolt on, rather than something woven through the other eleven pillars, tend to fall behind quickly.
For Derbyshire and East Midlands businesses in particular, getting this right matters more than ever. Local competition for attention is only getting tighter as more of it shifts into AI-generated answers.

Everything in this post is learnable in an afternoon. Write original content, strengthen your EEAT signals, structure pages so they can be quoted, and keep watching the data. None of it is complicated in theory.
What trips businesses up is doing it consistently while also running the rest of the operation. That is the gap between owners who read an article like this and nod along, and owners who actually see their AI citations and organic traffic recover.
That gap is where we come in. Eighteen years of doing this for Derbyshire and East Midlands businesses has taught me that the plan matters far less than someone actually being accountable for putting it into action.
